My wife and I were getting estimates for window shutters. Like everyone else, we called contractors whose "advertising" made them appear well established and trustworthy. We invested 5 evenings (about 11 hrs. of our time) with local contractors. Two salesmen said wood shutters were better than vinyl, but more expensive. The other three said the exact opposite, with synthetic shutters being the better choice. The price difference from lowest to highest was about $2,900. However, none of the estimates reflected the same materials, so how could we distinguish which one was the best VALUE? Were the low bids using cheaper materials and cutting corners? Were we being gouged by the higher quotes? Was the middle price fair? Each salesman was pushing a different, and according to them, better product. All of them were recommending upgrades.
